This is a view of The Street and what Capability Brown did with the landscape just after 1780. Just below the centre are the platforms for St James’ Church, but of particular note is how much of the valley bottom has been levelled and the backs of the houses dug out of the valley sides. All this chalk moving just to present a wide street for the new village was done by spade and wheelbarrow.

The serpentine layout is also a notable and unusual feature.
