Milton Abbas Local History Group

We would like to locate all the field names used in the parish of Milton Abbas.

As a starting point we have the field names given in A D Mills Dorset Place Names, Part 3. This lists the first and subsequent occurrences of the name in early documents and maps.

We have maps of 1652, 1770, 1811, and the Ordnance Survey 25 inch series available for research..

We also have local farmers who are members of the Milton Abbas Local History Group and of course know the old and recent field names and landscape features.

We also have the Milton Abbey Estate Rent book of 1927 which lists every field of each farm, together with their use (meadow, pasture, arable) and acreage.

Thus we have great sources of information to compile the historic topography.
