Mysteries

Since the old town of Milton Abbas or Middleton is such an ancient foundation (King Athelstan charter 934) many legends have grown up about the Abbey and the town.

We are always looking for documents and photos which will enhance our understanding.

In particular, there was a village hall here which many residents still remember and have tales to tell. One of our resident couples had their wedding reception there but do not have a photo. It must have been used too by the GI’s billeted here in WW2, and the NAAFI that we know was here in 1939. We have searched everywhere but can find no photograph. Please let us know if you can help with this.

We know that the Women’s Institute, Milton Abbas branch did a survey of field names around 1960. But we have searched high and low and have been unable to find it, Dorset History Centre have not found it either. We have a 1927 rent book which lists all the fields with their Ordnance Survey numbers.
