Family History

As part of our Old Town project we began researching the family trees of people who lived in Milton Abbas – we know who was in the Old Town in 1770 and we need to find out what happened to those people during the destruction of the old town and building of the new village. We need to know who moved away, who stayed and all their occupations.

We have been given several family trees already covering this period, and we have a group researching the other names.

As part of the history we have access to the Overseers of the Poor books which detail who is receiving poor relief and who is paying rates. Work is under way transcribing these books and making the records available to our members. We would very much appreciate your help – this can be done from anywhere in the world (we have associates in Australia, Canada and Lytham St Annes) see the Get Involved page. You will be given access to high resolution images of the original documents, and help with reading old documents if you need.

A list of the names occurring during the 17th, 18th and 19th century is available here.
