We have started to research these places using Place Names of Dorset, A D Mills; An Inventory of the Historical Monuments in Dorset, by the Royal Commission, and History; Antiquities of the County of Dorset by John Hutchins, 3rd edition and the Victoria County History of Dorset Vol 3 Domesday.
We would love to hear from anyone who has information on the history of these manors. Contact us here.
In our transcription of the Sunday School records of 1789, one boy is given the job of “Usher” and receives more money than the other attendees. We have not been able to find out what the role of usher at Sunday School was this soon after their foundation. We would be grateful if any of our readers would care to research this. It is no use typing “usher” into Google as it brings up thousands of results for modern day America!
Thanks to a team of transcribers we have now completed entering all records into a spreadsheet. There are 13 800 records. Together with the Filter and Search Functions in Google sheets we now have a vital resource for further analysis.
Thanks to one of our members who has researched this almost unknown story from newspaper articles and the court documents and letters held in the Dorset History Centre. A presentation was given to the Milton Abbas History Group on 3 April and will be available on the Member’s Section of this website soon.
At the Dorset History Centre there is the 2nd Edition which has been added to by A. M. Broadley of the Knapp, Bradpole. In 1904 he took a copy of Hutchin’s book and added to it drawings, notes, maps and even original letters and documents. This is known as the Hutchins’ Extra Illustrated Edition and consists of 12 volumes.
Thanks to the Milton Abbey Heritage Trust, Bryan Phillips is now a published author, Amazon page here and you can buy the Kindle book or the paperback on Athelstan’s Dream here
Many thanks to June McAvoy for this beautiful tree as the entry of the Milton Abbas Local History Group in the 2018 Christmas Tree Festival in St James Church, Milton Abbas.

It is presented by Ben Robinson.
The programme has been broadcast nationally five times since its first showing in January, 2019.
It will be showing continuously at our exhibition at the Milton Abbas Street Fair Sat 27 July 2019. We have much more information than was shown on this programme, so if you want to know what went on the cutting room floor come and talk to us there.
We are a Local History Group and we undertake research into the old village, the Street and the lives of those that loved and worked there. We appreciate any help that members can provide to that end.
Family historians, please note that we do not focus on Family history’s but if you feel you could help and contribute to the social history of Milton Abbas Please get in touch.
