Milton Abbey

Traskey book jacket

For anyone with an interest in Milton Abbey or Abbas this marvellous book was published in 1978 by a master at Milton Abbey School, Peter Traskey. It is unfortunately out of print, but available at Abe Books second hand. It has saved the history group an enormous amount of time and effort because it was thoroughly researched and is authoritative.

We have now found a document which Peter Traskey knew about from Hutchins, but had never seen or read himself. It was in the British Library at the time of Peter’s research, and now we now have a digital copy. It is the Custumal of Milton Abbey of 1317. I am now researching this document’s information which tells us the conditions and work which the peasants had to perform on the Milton Abbey manors over 700 years ago. You can find some of the general conclusions on my pages of Medieval Peasant Life.

Thank you to the late Peter Traskey whose ashes are scattered just south of Milton Abbey Church, for your scholarship and perseverance.
