St Catherine’s Well

03-IMG_8505 (2016_01_30 13_22_42 UTC)St Catherine’s Chapel has been on its present site from at least the late 12th century. There may have been an earlier chapel here. It was certain to be a place of pilgrimage, because there is a stone inscribed with an indulgence. There has been much debate on the exact meaning of this inscription.

There is a road named Catherines Well. Was there ever an actual well associated with St Catherine? Where is it? Could it have been a holy well? A spring on which was built a shrine to St Catherine?

There are known to be medieval wells around the area bored into the chalk.
